A phone draws only the power supported by the phone, charger and cable together. A large number on the adapter therefore does not automatically make charging faster. The whole chain needs compatible, clearly stated specifications.

- The output of each port rather than only the adapter's headline maximum.
- How power is divided when two or three devices are connected together.
- The cable connector and its own power rating.
- The plug format, build quality and clear manufacturer labelling.
When to stop using it
Moderate warmth under load can be normal, but smell, crackling, sparks, deformation or burning-hot surfaces mean disconnect immediately. Do not cover an adapter with fabric or use a damaged socket. For an unusual phone, confirm protocol compatibility before payment.
