A voltage indicator is designed for the range and task stated by its manufacturer. It does not automatically prove circuit condition, earthing quality or that a conductor is safe to touch. A mistake around electricity can cause serious injury.
01Minimum safety rules
- Read the instructions and ratings; never use an unknown indicator on mains voltage.
- Inspect the body, probe, insulation and battery where fitted.
- Prove operation on a known source both before and after the check.
- Do not work with wet hands, in a damp area or beside damaged wiring.
- Do not treat a missing indication as proof of isolation without the required verification procedure.
When to call an electrician
Stop and use a qualified electrician if a panel must be opened, exposed conductors handled, a wiring fault diagnosed, or you are unsure of the instrument category. An online guide cannot replace authorisation, protective equipment and a safe system of work.
