How to Choose an X-ray Scanner for Your Facility

Tunnel size, actual flow, operator workstation, radiation safety, and service — without unnecessary specifications.

Short answer. A suitable X-ray scanner allows the typical objects of the object to pass without a dangerous queue, helps the trained operator to notice the right signs, and has clear support. First, the items, flow and inspection procedure are described, then the tunnel, conveyor, image functions and service model are selected.

Start with the process, not the machine

An X-ray scanner is only one stage of inspection. Before selecting a model, describe the path of a visitor, employee, courier, or cargo: where the item is received, who places it on the conveyor, what the operator does in case of doubt, where the repeated inspection is conducted, and how to avoid mixing checked and unchecked items.

If a secondary inspection is not provided, a good image alone will not work. The operator will either skip dubious items or stop the flow without a clear solution. The terms of reference should include the rules of action, and not only a list of equipment functions.

Measure Items That Pass Daily

The tunnel size is chosen based on the largest regular items, not the average bag. Measure the suitcases, boxes, mailbags, crates, and equipment that will actually be inspected. Add room for convenient placement, but remember: too large a tunnel takes up space, changes the height of the work area, and usually increases cost.

Check the allowable load on the conveyor and weight distribution. A heavy box may formally fit through a passage, but be inconvenient or unacceptable for the belt. For large cargo, a roller conveyor, a separate line, or another inspection technology may be required.

Count the flow in peak 15 minutes

The average number of people per day hides the queue before a shift, event, or start of working time. Measure the short peak: how many people come at the same time, how many items each has, and how many seconds it takes for placement, inspection, and clearing the belt. Often, the limitation is not the conveyor speed but the actions of people and the operator.

For stable operation, provide space before and after the device, a preparation table, return of trays, and a secondary inspection procedure. If one line cannot handle the peak, it is better to calculate the number of lines and staff in advance than to buy an expensive device and still get a queue.

Evaluate image quality on your own test items

published specifications are useful for preliminary selection, but the employee works with specific bags, packaging, and interference. Request a demonstration on a set of items similar to yours. Assess how clearly dense areas, overlapping objects, thin elements, and materials in a typical arrangement are distinguished.

Color modes, zoom, edge enhancement, and automatic cues do not replace the operator. It is important that function switching is quick and does not force the person to memorize a complex sequence of buttons. Separately check monitor size, screen position, glare, and prolonged work in a chair.

Operator and training are more important than a set of buttons

The result depends on training, attention, and the allowable duration of continuous work. The training plan should include the basics of image formation, typical threats to the facility, the use of the device's functions, actions in case of doubt, and rules for communicating with visitors.

Periodic skill checks on test images and analysis of mistakes are required. If the operator simultaneously answers the phone, issues passes, and monitors several screens, the probability of a miss increases. Therefore, the workplace and the distribution of responsibilities are included in the inspection project.

Radiation safety is a management system

Baggage X-ray scanners use an X-ray generator. Safety is ensured by design, shielding, interlocks, indicators, proper placement, condition monitoring, and training. The International Atomic Energy Agency separately considers inspection units for baggage, cargo, and transport and recommends a radiation protection program.

Before delivery, clarify the requirements of Kazakhstan law regarding installation, accounting, control, and personnel for the specific type of equipment. Do not transfer rules from a promotional brochure or another country. The premises must have safe passages, restricted access to hazardous areas, warning signs, and a clear procedure for actions in case of malfunction.

Check the room and engineering conditions

Dimensions are needed not only for the body but also for loading zones, item exit points, maintenance, and evacuation passage. Check the width of doors and corridors along the delivery route, floor load capacity, base levelness, power supply, grounding, temperature, and heat dissipation capability.

Coordinate the network and access rights if the device transmits archives or data to other systems. The interface cannot be connected to the corporate network without IT service involvement. The customer determines in advance who sees the images, how long they are stored, and how export is registered.

Calculate Recovery Time, Not Just Buy Price

The X-ray scanner can become the only entry line. Therefore, before the contract, it is important to know who performs diagnostics, whether remote support is available, where the main modules and consumables are located, how long a visit takes, and which work is not covered by the warranty. Request the procedure for response to failure and the option for a temporary inspection scheme.

When comparing proposals, separately specify delivery, rigging, commissioning, training, control measurements, documentation, maintenance, and spare parts. A cheap supply without these items may turn out to be more expensive after the first failure.
